Short-term visitor medical insurance may help with eligible new illnesses, accidental injuries and emergency care while a person travels. It is not comprehensive long-term U.S. health coverage and does not pay every bill.

The following six IMG examples use historical quotes checked August 24, 2026, for a 40-year-old male Chinese citizen and resident traveling primarily to the U.S. September 1–30, 2026, with a $0 deductible. These 30-day prices are not current quotes. Eligibility, price and benefits depend on age, residence, destination, dates, deductible, limits, options, state and contract version.

1. What Is Visitor Medical Insurance?

It is short-term travel medical coverage for a person temporarily away from their country of residence. Depending on the contract it may cover new illness, injuries, doctor or urgent-care visits, eligible hospital services, prescriptions, emergency medical evacuation, repatriation and sometimes telehealth. It generally is not ACA/Obamacare coverage and does not replace Medicare, employer coverage or long-term coverage in the visitor's home country.

Compare benefit structure, specific limits, network rules and exclusions, not just price. These are historical examples; confirm current offerings and actual contract documents.

3. Comprehensive Versus Scheduled Benefits

The Patriot examples are described as comprehensive: eligible expenses are handled under deductibles, networks, coinsurance and the policy maximum, and individual services can have separate limits. Visitors Care uses scheduled benefits: each service has a stated payment amount. A $20,000 hospital bill does not automatically receive $20,000 merely because the total maximum exceeds it. Hospital, doctor, test and surgery benefits may each have their own caps, leaving the patient responsible for differences.

4. Comparing Patriot Options

In this particular historical example Patriot Lite was $107.63, Plus was $115.50 ($7.87 more), and Platinum was $186.00 with a $2 million medical maximum and included telehealth. Compare in- and out-of-network coinsurance, sublimits, preauthorization and exact version before deciding. A higher maximum does not mean every expense is covered.

5. Comparing Visitors Care Options

The three illustrated Visitors Care options have lower premiums and different maximums and schedules. Lite has the lowest example cost and lowest listed limits; Plus increases limits; Platinum has the highest medical maximum in this series but still pays scheduled benefits. These plans may suit someone who understands the limited payment schedule and can handle significant gaps. The maximum is not a promise to pay every bill below that number.

6. What May Be Covered?

Depending on medical necessity, reasonable charges and the contract, eligible items may include a new illness, injury, emergency visit, hospitalization, surgery or prescription; emergency evacuation and repatriation; certain COVID-19 treatment; and included or optional telehealth. Claims depend on the plan, network, deductible, coinsurance, specific limits, preauthorization and insurer review.

7. Common Exclusions and Limits

Restrictions may apply to general preexisting conditions and travel for treatment; routine exams and elective services; nonmedically necessary or experimental care; routine pregnancy, childbirth and newborn care; self-harm, unlawful acts or alcohol/drug misuse; war or hazardous activities without applicable coverage; and charges beyond policy or service limits. Exact exclusions, endorsements and applicable law control.

8. Chronic or Preexisting Conditions

An acute-onset provision is not full coverage of a preexisting condition. It often requires sudden, unexpected symptoms and immediate treatment to stabilize the condition, with limits on age, stability, timing, travel purpose and prior treatment. Routine follow-up, refills, planned treatment and traveling to obtain care are generally not covered merely because the policy mentions acute onset. Read the applicable sample contract before purchase.

9. How to Use Coverage

  1. Save the card, certificate number, insurer contact details and MyIMG access after coverage starts.
  2. For nonemergencies, locate an in-network doctor or urgent care, or use included telehealth if available.
  3. Show the card and ask whether the provider can bill the insurer directly.
  4. For a life-threatening emergency, call 911 or go to the nearest emergency department; notify the insurer as soon as reasonably possible after stabilization.
  5. Hospitalization, surgery, MRI/CT, rehabilitation and evacuation may require preauthorization.
  6. Keep itemized bills, diagnoses, records, receipts, prescriptions, travel documents and claim forms; submit and track them through the indicated channel.

Evacuation commonly requires the insurer's coordination and authorization; check the contract and contact the insurer when practicable.

10. How to Choose

A very low-cost scheduled plan may leave a large gap. Compare comprehensive options if large U.S. bills are the main concern, and check the details rather than assuming a more expensive plan covers everything. For chronic conditions, check the actual acute-onset definition, stability period, age and treatment rules. Review the maximum, deductible, network coinsurance, service limits, preauthorization, trip cancellation, adventure activities, dates and state version.
